Corporate Scandal of Enron A corporate scandal is a major financial defraument done to a company, a legal entity, by the creations of the law. The scandal in most cases is perpetuated by the insiders of the company, sometimes with the help of outsiders or experts in a specific field. It could be as a result of the an unscrupulous and malicious intentions one of the employees to rob off large amounts of money from the targeted company. Many companies have undergone this unfortunate incident, which in extreme cases leads to the fall of such companies. It is a practice which traces its origin to time antiquity . The chances are however reduces by the introduction of new technology and prudent systems in finance management. Accounting is a crucial aspect when it comes to the management of a company. From the books of records the interested parties are able to follow up on the cash flows and are able to detect and save a situation incase of incidences relating to fra ud. The importance of accounting in the management of the funds has also been instrumental in the conduction of fraud. The abuse of prudent accounting practices instituted by the international accounting bodies provides the leeway through which fraud takes place. The practices, when followed, blocks and reduces possibilities of fraud taking place in any organization. As mentioned earlier, the advent of technology is also a blessing in disguise. It could be used to prevent fraud but unfortunately, many have also used it to perpetuate crime and fraud. A company which has suffered fraud lately is Enron Corporation. Enron Corporationà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s inception dates back to 1985 when it was started by Kenneth Lay. Enron dealt in energy, petroleum products and later diversified to other fields such as communication.It had its headquarters in Texas (Miller 2002). Even though the original corporationà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s target was the pipeline sector, the company soon spread its operat ions to other fields. Soon the company was in other business which enabled it to open its online platform for trade, it soon become an huge business site. For a considerably long time, the company enjoyed huge profits and the value of ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s securities stood at a high market value. Until the time of its collapse, the company was a home to at least 20,000 permanent employees. The number of people who depended on the company for livelihood could even be higher considering the other coporate clients. Regardless of the big name the company has and the adorable reputation the company enjoyed over the past, recently the companyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s name hit the headlines in media outlets and social platforms due to wrong reasons; that of fraud. The companyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s fortunes, however, started dwindling in 2001 when the then CEO Mr. Jeffrey Skilling announced his exit from the company. This was a blow considering that he was the main driving force behind the good fort unes of the company. When his successor took over, the company soon announced a huge loss of 618 million dollars (Miller 2002). This was the beginning of the bankruptcy path started by Enron which later ensured the de facto fall of other client companies. The scandal methodology which was applied to defraud the companies of millions of shillings was a complex chain of top management and the financial officers. Seemingly, the problems had started emerging earlier than expected if the exit of Jeffrey Skilling was anything to go buy. A critical investigation into the matter later revealed a complex web of connection wired towards conducting this crime. Enronà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s corporation had huge debts which the Chief Financial Officer, Andrew Fastow hid from the management and the shareholders. As a general accounting rule, a companyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s financial statements should be made public periodically to enable the shareholders to assess the growth curve of the company and a lso follow the performance of the company. The management, should be able to assess the status of the company if the available records of performances are availed. The Chief Financial Officer at Enron, conspired with the CEO of the corporation to misrepresent the state of affairs of the company to the board. Unfortunately, this web was spread even further to the audit firm which would later collapse due to bankruptcy following the spill over effect of the company. The accounting inappropriaty that was used to commit this fraud is imprudence. The Chief Financial officer did not bother to follow the rules and regulations provided by the Globally Accepted Accounting Principles(GAAP). In these provisions, the finance department should maintain all the records of transactions and the documentations made during the transactions for accountability and auditing purposes. In this case, from the conspiracy, there must have not been documents maintained by the Financial Officer. As a result , the debts of the company could not be traced and followed up. The debts accumulated with the knowledge of the financial officers with less knowledge of the board of directors. During the quarterly reporting of the performance of the firm, the cracks were already too large to amend. The company had accumulated debts which could not be settled and therefore that meant the fall of the once celebrated and lucrative energy firm. The firm somehow, managed to hide the scandal until it could not be corrected . For a long time, the chief Financial Officer provided misleading financial statements and untrue state of affairs of as company(Miller 2002). This blinded the board of directors and therefore could not address the huge debt which had been incurred by the company. The debts accumulated and the real worth of the company was hidden even further. The initial conspiracy with the audit firm, Arthur Andersen Accounting Firm not to reveal the real state of affairs gave even more room for misappropriation which later sank the company into a deep ditch. The Chief Executive Director of the company, also must have been part of the conspiracy to hide the real status of the company. The misrepresented financial documents and the forged transactional documents led to the eventual fall of the company. The scandal at the Enronà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Corporation affected so many factions both directly and indirectly. As earlier mentioned, the number of employees which ranged from 20,000 to 30,000 were all driven to joblessness (Miller 2002). This act of rendering a huge number of employees jobless had a ripple effect to the lives of many people. Families which depended on the income from the company for survival were pushed to anguish and the social benefits which they used to receive such as the medical cover were all relinguished. Since the company collapsed due to the debts, it was not able to pay for the pension or even the compensation fee. The same effect was felt by the shareholders. They had no single idea that the company was falling apart. As a result, they never sold their securities and thence were caught up in the whole loss. They went at huge losses running into millions due to the value of the stocks which had depreciated to less than a dollar per share. The shareholders of the company bore the brunt of misappropriation and corruption. On the same note, the fall of the company had devastating effects on the society at large. In one way or another, a good number of people depended on the company for survival. The suppliers of different products to the company which were used for transactional purposes had their jobs and contracts cut short by the utter misappropriation of funds. In addition, the companyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s fall had caused a lot of nominal losses outside the firm since the services which were once enjoyed by the consumers would now be terminated. This extended to the social responsibility which were provided by the com pany. The effects of the scandal went far and wide. It is the same reason which lead to dissolution of the Arthur Andersen, the accounting firm which audited the accounts of the firm at the time. The fall of this accounting fim, though not precedented, it had also conspired with the section of management of the management to cause all the mischief. On a wider scale, the fall of the company was a draw back to the economy of United State of America. The company had claimed a substancial section of the market through the essential services provided and the tax revenue remitted to the government. The tax revenue which would be foregone would be a great loss and set back to government policies and plans. In terms of integrity, it injured the perception of American companies in the intertional front. The investors from other parts of the world were therefore scared from investing in the America due to the possibility of such mega deals impacting on the shareholders (Fox 2002). It also emerged that the company structures were weak and prone to malicious intentions of some people who would think of infiltrating into the investments of the shareholders. The emergence of these weak structures injured the integrity of accounting in an international platform (Eichenwald 2005). The conspiracy between the practicing firm and sections of the management of Enronà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s to commit this inhumane act was a show of weak integrity and loss of trust. From the period thenceforth, it emerged that the accounting firms which are mandated to check and oversee the operations of the companies in the light of proper record keeping and accurate representation of financial records. This noble duty was marred with stains of corruption painting the whole name of the practicing firms red. Globally, it exposed the flaws in the American company laws. To this end, there established more stringent rules and laws embedded in the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 to redeem the interna tional image and bring the sanity back in the management of the shareholderà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s funds in any publicly traded company. To avoid the reoccurrence of such mega scandal, there are a number of ideas which should be taken into consideration. Firstly, the government have the powers to curb all these by enacting stringent laws governing the management of the companies and the consequesnces for non adherence. This particular factor was taken into consideration in the enactment of the Sarbanes à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â‚¬Å"Oxley Act 2002 (Eichenwald 2005). In such enactions, the government should incorporate the extent to which different accounting firms should engage in the affairs of the a company. It should also address the issue of segregation of duties in the company management to prevent overlapping of duties. The board of directors should also be mandated to be more of insiders than decision makers only. Apart from the stringent laws enacted by the relevant authorities, there should also be the company structures and frameworks to prevent and curb any acts of fraud which might be conceived. The presence of such strong structures will curb and increase accountability in the workers. On the same note, the conspiracy between the Chief Financial Officer and the Chief Executive Officer brings to light the oversight structures which are instituted by the company. It is sad that the decision of two people can bring the whole company down without the knowledge of others. It is therefore recommended that the leadership of the company and the spread of power and duties should be wide enough to accommodate the efforts of at least a good number of people and not only few individuals who could decide to defraud the company of millions. The accounting firms should also up their game to endeavour to produce personnel with more integrity. The nature of the job is tricky and tempting, therefore, the integrity part should be inculcated by the trainers themselves so tha t much conspiracy is reduced and not many incidences of fraud are reported (Fox 2002). In conclusion, the scandals facing companies have been around for a little longer time. It does not segregate, it affects companies in both developed and developing countries. Once it occurs, the effects are felt far and wide. The effects could be inform of money or loss of values. To prevent its occurrence, there is need to be stringent structures and rules governing the corporate governance. The history, anecdotes, sights, and beauty of each spot confirmed that this is a land of possibilities, filled with more than I could ever imagine in my tiny country of origin, Korea. The only limitation I face in achieving great heights is the scope of my vision. My road trip has yielded a portrait of potential discovery not realized. There are different rules, known as norms, by which we must abide in order to be considered well adjusted to society. It is important to understand that one does not spontaneously become the person that they are, and automatically follow the norms that they follow. They must be taught by others in their society such as their parents, as well as by societal structures such as education, and the media. Although most Americans would like to think of themselves as autonomous beings, it is a fact that our choices are shaped by larger social forces around us such as the historical or cultural contexts and social institutions. We make these decisions because we have internalized the values, beliefs, and norms of our culture. Through socialization we learn to perform different roles such as American citizen, mother, or worker. Along with socialization comes our shaping by societal structures. Societal structures refer to the pattern within culture and organization through which social action takes place. A good example of a societal structure is the media. The media has a major affect on how society is conditioned to follow certain norms. For example we learn about what is acceptable and unacceptable by watching the news. The news will cover issues such as murder, rape, and incest, condemning them, making it know that these actions are deviant. Societal structure includes the arrangement of roles, organizations, institutions, and cultural symbols. These roles, organizations, institutions and cultural symbols are often invisible, and remain stable over long periods of time. Having a sociological perspective also allows us to view the inequalities in the world between different classes, races, and genders. We are able to see how someone who is African American has to struggle to get to a high executive office, an office that is easier to attain for a white male. Sociologists find it important to note that the differences between us are not so much biological as they are cultural. We are socialized by our society and societal structures. Those structures often promote the inequalities found within a society. The sociological perspective allows us to see with the naked eye just how society works, and the effects is has on its members. Colonel General Heinz Guderian in World War II Colonel General Heinz Guderian was German military officer who helped pioneer blitzkrieg warfare using armor and motorized infantry. A veteran of World War I, he elected to remain in the service during the interwar years and published his ideas on mobile warfare as the book Achtung - Panzer!. With the beginning of World War II, Guderian commanded armored formations in the invasions of Poland, France, and the Soviet Union. Briefly falling out of favor, he later served as Inspector-General of the Armored Troops and Acting Chief of the General Staff. Guderian ultimately surrendered to American forces on May 10, 1945. Early Life Career The son of a German soldier, Heinz Guderian was born at Kulm, Germany (now Chelmno, Poland) on June 17, 1888. Entering military school in 1901, he continued for six years until joining his fathers unit, Jger Bataillon No. 10, as a cadet. After brief service with this unit, he was dispatched to a military academy at Metz. Graduating in 1908, he was commissioned as a lieutenant and returned to the jgers. In 1911, he met Margarete Goerne and quickly fell in love. Believing his son too young to marry, his father forbade the union and sent him for instruction with the 3rd Telegraph Battalion of the Signal Corps. World War I Returning in 1913, he was permitted to marry Margarete. In the year before World War I, Guderian underwent staff training in Berlin. With the outbreak of hostilities in August 1914, he found himself working in signals and staff assignments. Though not at the front lines, these postings allowed him to develop his skills in strategic planning and the direction of large-scale battles. Despite his rear area assignments, Guderian sometimes found himself in action and earned the Iron Cross first and second class during the conflict. Though he often clashed with his superiors, Guderian was seen as an officer with great promise. With the war winding down in 1918, he was angered by the German decision to surrender as he believed that the nation should have fought until the end. A captain at the end of the war, Guderian elected to remain in the postwar German Army (Reichswehr) and was given command of a company in the 10th Jger Battalion. Following this assignment, he was shifted to the Truppenamt which served as the armys de facto general staff. Promoted to major in 1927, Guderian was posted to the Truppenamt section for transport. Believing that armor should play the key role in any attack, he argued that formations should be mixed and contain motorized infantry to aid and support the tanks. By including support units with the armor, breakthroughs could be quickly exploited and rapid advances sustained. Espousing these theories, Guderian was promoted to lieutenant colonel in 1931 and made chief of staff to the Inspectorate of Motorized Troops. A promotion to colonel quickly followed two years later. With German rearmament in 1935, Guderian was given command of the 2nd Panzer Division and received a promotion to major general in 1936. Over the next year, Guderian recorded his ideas on mobile warfare, and those of his compatriots, into the book Achtung - Panzer!. Making a persuasive case for his approach to war, Guderian also introduced a combined arms element as he incorporated air power into his theories. Promoted to lieutenant general on February 4, 1938, Guderian received command of the XVI Army Corps. With the conclusion of the Munich Agreement later that year, his troops led the German occupation of the Sudetenland. Advanced to general in 1939, Guderian was made Chief of Fast Troops with responsibility for recruiting, organizing and training the armys motorized and armored troops. In this position, he was able to shape panzer units to effectively implement his ideas of mobile warfare. As the year passed, Guderian was given command of the XIX Army Corps in preparation for the invasion of Poland. World War II German forces opened World War II on September 1, 1939, when they invaded Poland. Putting his ideas into use, Guderians corps slashed through Poland and he personally oversaw German forces at the Battles of Wizna and Kobryn. With the conclusion of the campaign, Guderian received a large country estate in what became Reichsgau Wartheland. Though his superiors wished to slow his advance, threats of resignation and requests for reconnaissances in force kept his offensive moving. Driving west, his corps led the race to the sea and reached the English Channel on May 20. Turning south, Guderian aided in the final defeat of France. Promoted to colonel general (generaloberst), Guderian took his command, now dubbed Panzergruppe 2, east in 1941 to participate in Operation Barbarossa. In Russia Attacking the Soviet Union on June 22, 1941, German forces made quick gains. Driving east, Guderians troops overwhelmed the Red Army and aided in the capture of Smolensk in early August. Through his troops were preparing for a rapid advance on Moscow, Guderian was angered when Adolf Hitler ordered his troops to turn south toward Kiev. Protesting this order, he quickly lost Hitlers confidence. Ultimately obeying, he aided in the capture of the Ukrainian capital. His relief was facilitated by Army Group Center commander Field Marshal Gunther von Kluge with whom Guderian had frequently clashed. Departing Russia, Guderian was placed on the reserve list and retired to his estate with his career effectively over. In September 1942, Field Marshal Erwin Rommel requested that Guderian serve as his relief in Africa while he returned to Germany for medical treatment. This request was refused by the German high command with the statement, Guderian is not accepted. With the German defeat at the Battle of Stalingrad, Guderian was given new life when Hitler recalled him to serve as Inspector-General of the Armored Troops. In this role, he advocated for the production of more Panzer IVs which were more reliable than the newer Panther and Tiger tanks. Reporting directly to Hitler, he was tasked with overseeing armor strategy, production, and training. On July 21, 1944, a day after the failed attempt on Hitlers life, he was elevated to Army Chief of Staff. After several months of arguments with Hitler over how to defend Germany and fight a two-front war, Guderian was relieved for medical reasons on March 28, 1945. Later Life As the war wound down, Guderian and his staff moved west and surrendered to American forces on May 10. Kept as a prisoner of war until 1948, he was not charged with war crimes at the Nuremburg Trials despite requests from the Soviet and Polish governments. In the years after the war, he aided in the reconstruction of the German Army (Bundeswehr). Heinz Guderian died at Schwangau on May 14, 1954. He was buried at Friedhof Hildesheimer Strasse in Goslar, Germany.

They fight for our attention and our interest by using catching phrases and clever cliffhangers. But they may fail to bring the individual what they feel is important in the interest of pleasing the masses. My intake of information through the media during the day is quite interesting do to all the sources I have available to me. While I am at work I am in constant contact with a TV or Radio. On my day of observation at work it seemed the news media was not present on the radio, only constant weather reports. I was never interrupted with short news briefs on any of the major stations, which can be conmen on high volume news days. The short briefs only started broadcasting after the World Trade Center tragedies on September 11th. The TV inside the shop was first turned to the NASCAR Race of the day, and then to ESPN. ESPN was dominated with the news of the NCAA tournament bids. ESPN was showing a 3 hour special on the tournament, going over rankings, placement, and expected finishes, it is believed so much fuss is generated over this tournament due to all the gambling involved. ESPN was just constantly feeding its viewers with information to make them potentially better informed to place bets. Which in turn will draw in viewers. When I returned back to my dorm room is where I found must of my information. Watching the 11 o’clock local news on channel 2 I picked most of the current events. Major plans are being planed for Monday March 11, as it is the 6-month anniversary of the WTC attacks. A moment of silence is planed at 8:46am to mark the hit of the first plane against the towers. Other news touched on the major weather change over the weekend and the power loss many experienced. One of the most interesting facts I found was that the temperature dropped 20 degrees in 18 minutes. I think that is amazing. The local news also menti...
